Under the UNICEF-funded Rapid Response Mechanism (RRM) Nutrition Project, Lindii Peace Foundation (LPF) successfully conducted Family MUAC training for caregivers of children aged 6–59 months affected by Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) and Moderate Acute Malnutrition (MAM) in Dikwa Local Government Area, Borno State.
The training aimed to strengthen community-based nutrition surveillance by equipping caregivers with the knowledge and practical skills required to identify early signs of malnutrition at the household level.
During the session, caregivers were trained on the correct use of Mid-Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC) tapes, including accurate measurement techniques and interpretation of the standard color-coded indicators, red (severe malnutrition), yellow (moderate risk), and green (normal nutritional status). This practical approach enables families to take an active role in monitoring the nutritional well-being of their children.
To reinforce learning and ensure continuity of screening at the household level, MUAC tapes were distributed to all participating caregivers. This empowers families to conduct regular assessments, identify at-risk children early, and facilitate timely referral to appropriate nutrition services.
The initiative contributes to strengthening early warning systems for malnutrition within communities, reducing delays in treatment, and improving survival outcomes for vulnerable children.
Thanks to the support from the Nigeria Humanitarian Fund (NHF), through this intervention, LPF, in collaboration with UNICEF, continues to support community-led approaches that place lifesaving tools and knowledge directly in the hands of caregivers, ensuring that no child is left behind in the fight against malnutrition
